The president of Breast Care International Dr. Beatrice Wiafe -Addai has urged men to handle the breast of women with care.
It is not true that the more you suck a woman’s breast it prevents the risk of getting breast cancer.
Ghanaian men have been advised to desist from acts like squeezing the breasts of women, but rather handle it with care since it is a very fragile part of a woman’s body. This is according to the president of Breast Care International, Dr. Beatrice Wiafe-Addai.
According to her, the perception that men sucking the breasts of women prevents breast cancer is false, adding that men who engage in such acts must desist from it.
She cautioned men to be careful when handling the breasts of women, since any mishandling of the breast could pose risks to the women. She also advised against the squeezing and sucking of the breast by men.
According to her, sucking of the breast becomes a good thing when mothers breastfeed their babies, and not the other way round for adult men.
Discussing the issue of breast cancer awareness on Starr FM, Dr Wiafe-Addae said: “It is not true that the more you suck a woman’s breast it prevents the risk of getting breast cancer.
“What is true is that women who have children should breastfeed, and breastfeeding has some positive effect on the woman as far as breast cancer is concerned.”
“But not adult men to go and suck the breast thinking it will protect the woman from breast cancer, that is not true, it is very fragile so let’s handle it with care…don’t squeeze it like you have some mango or orange that you are squeezing to get some fluid out.”
Dr Wiafe-Addae said she has observed that many men detach themselves from women who are diagnosed with breast cancer.
This, she said, does not encourage affected women to take up the fight against breast cancer, since they virtually have no support.
She therefore advised men to offer support to affected women instead of sending them away to their family houses.
“If you find something in a woman’s breast don’t send her to her family home because she has been diagnosed of breast cancer. Give her all the morale even if not financial. So that she knows that someone is with her through the fight. The fight against breast cancer is not an easy one so women need all the support from men, society and the nation,” she remarked.
October is noted worldwide as the breast cancer awareness month.
