Female American rapper Belcalis Almanzar known professionally as Cardi B is an American hiphop artiste as well as a TV and social media personality.
The young rapper become the first to secure a solo No.1 spot in the US since Lauryn Hill’s Doo Wop (That Thing) in 1998 – and she also knocked queen of the charts Taylor Swift off the top spot in the process.
Cardi B comes from the Bronx in the New York City, although her family is of Carribbean descent hailing from Trinidad and Tobago and Dominica. Her parents nicknamed her Barcadi as a testament to her Carribben heritage.
Before Cardi B became the famous rapper everyone now knowns her for, she was an exotic dancer at the age of 18. She planned to retire from stripping at the age of 25 but quit at 23 when she became a social media personality.
Cardi went from escaping abuse at home, to stripping to make ends meet, to being a social media personality, to arriving on one of the biggest reality TV shows.
She featured in Love and HipHop: New York after her Instagram success but quit to focus on her music career.
Her song “Bodak Yellow” became the rap anthem of the summer, toping music charts and winning her BET HipHop Best Single of the Year 2017.
Her music career clearly has been a success for her.
